Indiana Medical Debt Coalition

Medical debt CoalitionIn 2020, the community needs assessments we conducted for the 22 Community Action Agencies that make up our parent organization revealed that medical debt is a significant barrier to low-income Hoosiers. Our research on this topic led us to grow a broad coalition, including top partners of Indiana's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and American Cancer Society. Together, we strive to ensure that Hoosiers regardless of financial circumstances can live healthy lives with the medical care they need in a way that supports their holistic well-being.

The transition to parenthood should be a joyful time, not one that is spent dealing with the financial strain of waves of medical bills. The Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute collaborated with Indiana Health Fund, Dr. Jacqueline Wiltshire at IU Fairbanks School of Public Health, and Deborah Fisher and Donjarica Walton, Grassroots MCH Leaders, on a project to study pregnant and postpartum women's experiences with health care costs and debt. In this short publication, Hoosier mothers discuss the causes and consequences of medical debt during pregnancy and early parenthood.
